A few days ago I made a comment about R.E.M. and how they should do a benefit concert for the Georgia Theatre in Athens. This led to copious R.E.M. listening on Youtube.

Have you seen R.E.M. live before? I've seen them twice at Alice Field in Gainesville, FL and once at Red Rocks here in Colorado. Amazing shows, all of them. Wonder what it would be have been like to see them at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, early on?
I regret that I've never seen a performance. I have always wanted to. But they were in Atlanta around this time last year, and where did they choose to play? Lakewood Amphitheatre. And you know what? I bet they had a good time. But Lakewood, my friend, is outside. In the summer. And I have been there before. In the summer. In Atlanta. It's kind of like walking through soup. Michael Stipe himself would have to dab my brow and soothe me with iced tea to get me to go back there under those conditions.
You might call me a snob, but I am a small venue person. My fantasy concert? R.E.M. at Eddie's Attic in Decatur. It is one of the coolest places in the known world.
